It will be the third container terminal in the Port. After signing the agreement with Transport Minister and chairman of the board of the Saudi Seaport Authority Jubara Al-Suraisri, at Jeddah Islamic Port, Mohammed Zainal Alireza, chairman of Tusdeer said the SR1.66 billion project, which will have a maximum capacity to accommodate 1.5 million containers annually when completed, is to be built on reclaimed land along the re-export zone over an area of 400,000 square meters, located at the northern end of the JIP. "The project is in line with the vision of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to encourage the private sector to play an effective role in the national progress," the chairman of Tusdeer noted. Alireza said the project's infrastructure will be completed in over three years and would be equipped with the latest technology in the field of marine transport, including the latest and largest cranes. With the completion of the new terminal the accommodating capacity of the JIP will be enhanced by 45 percent and add to the strategic importance of the JIP in the region. Outlining the scope the project, Alireza said it would create new job opportunities for a number of Saudi youths in addition to contributing to the economic development of the country. Furthermore, it will also help activate the re-export sector as a regional logistic support center as the terminal will be capable of accommodating the next generation container ships as well. It is also noted that the terminal will achieve integration with the land causeway with the completion of the east-west land bridge connecting with the proposed the Saudi railway project. Above all, the project will contribute to boost the business activity of consignment and re-export across the Kingdom, apart from increasing the competitive capability of the marine transport and support system in Saudi Arabia.
