In a circle that surrounds Puerto Cabello , the following mountains dominate: Cerro de Patanemo, with a Height of 218 Mtrs. ( 715 Ft .). It is the principal Port of Venezuela in regard with the handling of General, and Bulk cargo. Ships with lengths of 100 to 205 Mtrs. (328 to 672,4,8 Ft.) and with max. 35 feet ( 10.7 mtrs) of draught can be handled. It has Warehouses (All Private non Government operated) of 70.000 square meters and 600.000 square meters of open yards for containers storage (Private and Government operated). Grain silos capacity of about 25.000 Tons. It moves a total of 9.375.000 tons of general cargo and bulk per year. Puerto Cabello is located in a privileged zone, because its geographic position permits it to have rapid and direct contact with the industrial regions of the center and occidental part of the country. The Petrochemical Industry is of mayor importance. (located some 30 kilometers from the port)In the region two (2) refineries are in operation. Due to its natural characteristics, it can be considered like a lagoon or large lake artificially improved, surrounded by sandy beaches and coral line reefs. Its entrance is located 0.9 kms. ( 0.5 mi .) to the south of Punta Brava, in a bay that is 3.7 kms. ( 2.0 mi .) wide located to the SW. of the mentioned point. The inner part of the bay at the port was conditioned for port services. It is a mile long in an east-west direction and 0.9 kms. ( 0.5 mi .) in a north-south direction in the area of deep waters. The city of Puerto Cabello is located to the south and south west of the bay and more to the south, the mountains of the Cordillera de la Costa rise abruptly. The port has more than 1.600 mtrs. ( 5.248 Ft .) of wharf available. Next to the wharf's a depth of up to 12 Mtrs. ( 39 Ft .) was dredged in 1.950 (Today some are restricted). The docks for coastal trade has a length 825 mtrs. ( 2.076 ft .) and its adjacent depth was also dredged to 6 mtrs ( 19 ft .) on the same date. Puerto Cabello communicated with Barquisimeto ( Venezuela second industrial zone) by the only country functioning railroad system and with Valencia (first industrial zone), Maracay (Third industrial zone) and Caracas by modern highways that favored its development for being the most active economic zone of the county. |
