What is now lceland's capital is where the first settler, Viking lngoIfur Arnarson, built his farmstead in AD 874. He named it Reykjavik, meaning "Smoky Bay," after steam rising from geothermal springs in what is now the heart of town. Ironically, this clean, renewable natural source of heat for houses and swimming pools today makes Reykjavik, despite its name, a smoke-free and unpolluted city. |
